Is It Wheely Worth it? |

Thinking of buying an e-scooter for Christmas? You might want to think again. They might look like the perfect gift, but privately owned e-scooters aren’t toys and taking one out for a spin on the road or pavement could cost you more than you think. Whilst e-scooters may seem an exciting ‘toy’ to receive on Christmas Day, they are in fact not a toy at all. There are strict rules around e-scooters due to the speed they can travel and a lack of awareness of the law cannot only put the rider at risk, but other road users and pedestrians, too. Did you know, under UK law, e-scooters are illegal to use on public roads and paths? You must have a valid driving licence to use them, but even then, they can only be ridden on private land with the landowner’s permission. If we spot you on the public roads, it will be seized and destroyed. A waste of money ahead of Christmas, right? That’s a lot of money to spend on something you can’t legally ride where you want to and for it to end up in the crusher. It’s not just about the law; e-scooters can travel at speed, and one fall or collision could have life-changing consequences for you or someone else. This is why in partnership with the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner we’re launching our new ‘Is it wheely worth it?’ campaign, to make sure children, parents and guardians know the facts before Christmas morning. We’ll be stepping up our social media activity, visiting schools to educate children and teenagers and also carrying out an increased number of days of action to tackle the illegal use of e-scooters across our area. So, before you put one under the tree, ask yourself: is it really worth it? Know the law. Know the Speed. Know the Risks.
