Protect your home during the warm weather

Dear Resident,

I sent out a similar message to this a couple of months ago, but with the news reporting that we are entering a heatwave, I just wanted to reiterate the details of that message.

I have no doubt that you will be taking this opportunity to open your windows and doors to let some fresh air into your home to try and cool things down, this normally happens during the evening and overnight when the temperature drops compared to the daytime temperature.

Due to this, I would like to explain that 1 in 3 burglaries within Humberside are committed where the burglar has gained entry through an open window or an unlocked door.

So, by closing windows that someone could climb through when you aren't in a room, and by locking your doors, you will make your home less of an easy target to an opportunist burglar.

If you are looking for options to keep your house cool, there is advice on the internet on various sites.

This advice does include -

  • closing your windows and curtains during the day, as the outside air will warm your home up inside.
  • closing doors during the day.
  • using fans to move air around, a bowl of ice in front of the fan will assist in cooling the air.
  • Opening upstairs windows to allow heat out as it rises during the evening.
  • These are just a few options you could consider.

Try and keep cool, but do remember to close your windows and lock your doors.

Further crime prevention advice can be found on the Secured by Design website here.
