Dear Resident, In my last message I discussed how affective defensive planting can be in providing extra security for your garden, in this message I am going to look at shed security and how to reduce the risk that items in them will be stolen. Sheds are regularly targeted by burglars because most have very poor security and have expensive items in them, so they are considered easy targets. Below are some tips for you to consider that will make your shed less attractive to a burglar - Remember that most wooden sheds you can buy at garden centres or online are not very secure, if you want a higher security option, consider buying a steel storage unit rather than wood. We recommend Secured by Design approved steel storage options. We recommend never storing expensive equipment in a shed due to the low level of security provided. Even if good quality locks are fitted, burglars have been known cut the side of the shed or cut around the locks.Consider property marking and recording serial numbers of any equipment/bikes that are left in a shed and advertise that you have done this.If storing any battery powered tools, consider storing the tools and batteries separately.Utilise ground anchors and secure tools and garden equipment with a quality chain and padlock.Consider fitting a battery powered shed alarm and advertise that the shed is alarmed.Consider fitting motion activated CCTV and appropriate lighting in your garden. Advertise that you have CCTV covering your garden. We recommend using Immobilise.com to record your property and Bike Register for bikes. Both accounts are free to set up. Feel free to share this message, or post on social media. Further crime prevention advice is available on the Secured by Design website. Regards Jamie Jamie Steel Crime Reduction Humberside Police |
