Dear resident,
We have received a number of complaints from the residents and the council about the issues of cyclists on the footpath down Newland Avenue and Cottingham Road.
You may have spotted a number of officers today patrolling around this area between 15:00 - 17:00. We thought this was an optimal time to engage with cyclists and educate them during the rush hour of school kick out. Our aim here was not to fine cyclists who were riding on the footpath straight away, but to educate them around the law, the penalty fine and the safety of others.
Once spoken to, those who we stopped we explained we are sending a letter to their home address detailing why they were stopped and the consequences if they were caught in the future. We engaged with over 64 people, many of which will be receiving a letter. We spoke to many teenagers as well advising them to walk their bike whilst on a busy narrow path. We made it clear we do not want the to cycle on the road during rush hour but again if the footpath is busy with children and adults to be mindful and walk their bike during this time.
We are hoping to conduct more of these intervention in the near future.
We thank you for your continued support and we hope together we can improve the safety of others and educate those we engage with of the law.
Kind regards,
Humberside Police
