We have responded to several road traffic collisions and near-miss incidents, particularly at the Comberdale/Westoby Lane crossroads in Riplingham. It has been noted that some drivers have indicated that their satellite navigation systems do not accurately recognize certain crossroads, leading to confusion regarding right of way at give way or stop junctions. While satellite navigation is a valuable tool for efficient travel, it is important to acknowledge that inaccuracies can occur. Our officers frequently observe instances of driver distraction due to reliance on navigation systems, with some individuals taking directions too literally. We strongly encourage all drivers to remain attentive at crossroads and junctions. Even if you have the right of way, please be vigilant of surrounding vehicles and be prepared to brake or take evasive action if necessary. This message is not intended to patronize, but it is important to note that there have been at least 10 incidents at the highlighted crossroads in recent months, with the issue of satellite navigation being mentioned multiple times. While we cannot definitively attribute these incidents to navigation errors, factors such as speed may also contribute to the problem. Please prioritize safety while driving. Thank you. |
