Take care defrosting your car

Dear Resident,

With Christmas now behind us, the new year looks like it is bringing some colder nights with it. This may mean you waking up to your car windows being frosted over, and the requirement to remove the frost from your car windows before driving off.

Car thieves are aware, that during this type of weather, people do start their cars and then leave them to defrost, making such vehicles an easy target to be driven away.

Even if you have a keyless entry car and take the keys with you, the car can still be driven away, as due to a safety measure, the car will not stop when it loses contact with the key once it has been started.

Below are some tips to consider for the colder mornings.

  • Don't leave your car once you have started it.
  • Plan more time into your morning to defrost your car.
  • Be aware that you could commit driving offences if frost on your car restricts your vision whilst driving.
  • Consider putting a sheet over your car windscreen to prevent it frosting up.
  • Consider buying de-icer and ice scrappers to remove the frost from car windows before driving.
  • Look up how best to defrost your car in the car's manual, this will give the correct advice for your make and model.
  • Be aware that the windows could refreeze on colder mornings, even after you have cleared them.
