Officers from our Roads Policing Unit (RPU) are continuing their efforts to keep our roads safe over the festive period, tackling those driving under the influence. As part of Op Yuletide, officers have carried out a total of 519 breath tests and 45 drug wipes since Sunday 1 December.
Inspector Neil Hutchins from our Roads Policing Unit said: “Over the last few weeks, our team have been out on the roads proactively targeting those who think it is acceptable to drive under the influence.
“Of the 519 breath tests carried out so far, 57 of them have been charged with drink driving offences and out of the 45 drugs wipes, a total of 18 have come back positive.
“An essential part of the campaign is educating road users. By carrying out these tests, we aim to raise awareness of the dangers and consequences of driving while impaired.
“Our officers will continue to challenge and hold accountable those who make the reckless decision to drive whilst under the influence.
“We have seen the devastating consequences that drink driving, and drug driving can have – one drink too many, one bad choice, can mean the difference between life and death.
“Of course, we want people to enjoy themselves through the festive season, but we continue to urge people to also prioritise planning their journey home ahead of going out to celebrate.”
Between Saturday 7 December 2024 and Saturday 29 March 2025, Stagecoach will be running late night buses between 12.10am and 1.10am, to provide people with safe and convenient travel.
