Keep Your Family Safe This Festive Season

Keep Your Family Safe This Festive Season

As we look forward to a festive season filled with joy and celebration, it’s important to also prioritise fire safety to make sure your family and home remain safe and sound. A few simple precautions can go a long way in preventing accidents during the holidays.

Here are some fire safety tips to keep in mind:

  • If you’re still shopping for presents, be cautious of scams. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Cheaper electrical items often have a greater risk of starting a fire
  • Check fairy lights, electric blankets and other electrical items for signs of wear and tear before plugging them in
  • Don’t overload electric sockets– most can only take a maximum of 13 amps
  • Candle safety: Never leave burning candles unattended or place them near decorations, cards, or curtains that can easily catch fire
  • Cook with care: Don’t leave pans unattended and always supervise children in the kitchen
  • Turn off and unplug electrical appliances (unless they are meant to be left on, like your fridge-freezer)
  • Turn off heaters when leaving the room or going to bed, and always use fire guards to protect against sparks and embers. Keep heaters away from bedding, curtains, furniture, or anything else that could easily catch fire
  • Don’t charge things like mobile phones, tablets or e-cigs overnight, near exits, or longer than the recommended charging time
  •

Lastly, don’t forget to regularly test your smoke alarms, it only takes a moment and remember, you are twice as likely to survive a fire at home if you have a working smoke alarm.

Wishing you a safe and joyful festive season.
